One of our most popular and hands-on programs is Swiftwater Rescue Training. This exciting course introduces students to the fast-paced world of swiftwater rescue, helping them become comfortable in a whitewater environment. Students will learn essential techniques for swimming in Class I-III whitewater and practicing safety procedures. This experience is held in one of the world’s premier swiftwater rescue classrooms, providing invaluable skills in water safety.
In our Throw Rope Rescue Skills course (2 hours), students will learn the life-saving techniques behind the throw rope or throw-bag—one of the most important tools for navigating swiftwater environments. This practical and engaging session teaches the proper techniques for throwing ropes, a core skill in water rescue that can be applied in various emergency situations. Not only is it a valuable lesson for whitewater enthusiasts, but it’s also a skill for life.
Our Cave Exploration Adventure offers an unforgettable experience, just a short walk from our outdoor centre. Students will explore ancient caves formed by the powerful meltwaters at the end of the last ice age, offering an exciting way to learn about geology and earth history. Imagine standing in caves carved by 10 times the flow of the Ottawa River, which once elevated the riverbanks by 70 feet—an extraordinary opportunity for students to connect with natural history.
Adjacent to Wilderness Tours Outdoor Centre, the Ottawa River Provincial Park provides a stunning natural classroom. Our Gorge Rim Hike takes students on a 2-3 hour moderate hike along the rim of an ancient gorge formed during the last ice age. This scenic loop trail offers an opportunity to learn about local ecology, geological formations, and the rich history of the area while experiencing the beauty of the Ottawa River.
For some lighthearted fun and active recreation, students can enjoy a free swim at our water park, featuring inflatable slides, a teeter-totter, and climbing walls. The water park is located in the bay near the main beach, and while there is no lifeguard on duty, life jackets are required for safety. This is a great way for students to relax and have fun after an adventurous day of learning and exploration.
After a day filled with adventure and learning, students can unwind with group campfires and evening games. The sports courts and games area are open under the lights, and campfires can be arranged in the main area or at alternative sites in the surrounding forest. This is a perfect way to end the day with team-building activities, games, and relaxation.
